Stanford football looks to replace Andrew Luck, but all set at tailback

SAN FRANCISCO ? Stanford coach David Shaw's priorities for training camp include identifying a starting quarterback, and filling holes at left tackle, wide receiver and safety.

Tailback is not among his chief concerns even though the Cardinal lost two dependable runners (Jeremy Stewart and Tyler Gaffney) and enters the 2012 season with just one proven commodity: senior Stepfan Taylor, who has rushed for 1,000 yards the past two seasons.

"It's a little different, but I'm extremely comfortable,'' said Shaw, whose team opens training camp Sunday. "I think we do a really good job teaching.''

One reason for the optimism is junior Anthony Wilkerson, who rushed for 282 yards last season. He has fully recovered from a knee injury that forced him to miss spring practice and "dominated his rehab,'' according to Shaw.

Beyond Wilkerson, Stanford has a slew of tailbacks with little game experience but considerable potential.

The group includes sophomores Ricky Seale and Jackson Cummings and redshirt freshman Remound Wright. True freshman Barry Sanders also has the potential to join the rotation.

"There's a lot of his dad in him,'' Shaw said, referencing the NFL Hall of Famer, "but at the same time he's his own runner.''

At quarterback, Brett Nottingham and Josh Nunes are competing for the vacancy left by Andrew Luck.

  • Backup kicker Eric Whitaker has quit the team to focus on academics, Shaw said.
  • Shaw's comments came during a media event sponsored by the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, which is scheduled for AT&T Park on Dec. 29.

The game will match a Pac-12 team against Navy, which has an agreement with the bowl this season so long as the Midshipmen are bowl-eligible.

O/N BOCES Board President Becky Albright Talks Kids

Becky Albright has been on the Orleans/Niagara BOCES Board of Education for 18 years representing the Wilson Central School District.? She was recently elected as the BOCES Board President from June 2012 to June 2013.? You might know her if you watch LCTV as the host of ?Your Public Schools which brings news about local educational topics to about 60,000 viewers.? When asked about being a board member this is what she had to say:?

?Try a little bragging now and again.?

In the beginning I had two children.? When my son and daughter were five and two respectively I adopted 1200 others between the ages of five and twenty-one.? By now it is obvious that I am a school board member. Elected to Wilson Central in 1986 before my son started school and my daughter was out of diapers, I became ?Mom? in a much broader sense of the word!

In 1994 I was elected to Orleans/Niagara BOCES and my brood grew to 37,000 give or take.? I don?t remember their birthdays and they will never get my car keys, but they are mine non-the-less!? I fret over them, I advocate for them, and I brag about them every chance I get.

About this bragging thing, I feel fully entitled to brag, after all aren?t they just the best things ever?? What would we do without them?? Wouldn?t we have wanted folks to brag about us a tiny bit?

There is a distinct difference between advocating and bragging. Advocating is speaking up for public education and? the resources we need,? I do a lot of that when I visit legislators, but bragging is bringing attention to what these kids are actually doing. There might be a more subtle way of saying it than bragging , but broadcasting success is sharing good news with folks that forget there IS good news because they don?t hear it anywhere else.

Frankly speaking I find board work stressful.? Advocacy in this climate is very demanding and frustrating, but when I brag?..I light up. Bragging brings a thrill to these old bones and is exhilarating not to mention energizing.? When I talk about pending legislation and budget woes I get depressed, so who wouldn?t choose thrilled over depressed!

Have you watched the face of a kid when you talk nice to them, when you talk to them as though you think they are special and you are proud of them?? Do you notice how they sit up straighter, maybe even smile a bit?? Have you tried that with parents? Have you tried that with community members? When kids do well everyone puffs up with a sense of accomplishment, that feeling of well-being can easily outweighs tax increases and other troubling events.

So here is brag 101, act like they are your kids.? Remember how you would open your wallet and take out the pics of your kids, well these are your kids, take out some stats and share them!? Ask your superintendent for a ?cheat sheet? of student achievements, graduation percents, student athlete teams, the scholarship monies earned.? Armed with these go public.? When someone asks you ?how are the kids? let them know!

I only recommend what I have done.? I have seen the faces and the reactions when good news spreads not only to the school community but also to the community at large. Give them something to feel good about, brag a little once in awhile.?

Recreation & Sport: The Joy of Fly Fishing in New Brunswick

foggy moncton morningWe like to start Saturday's with breakfast at Hynes restaurant. It gives us a little walk and some fresh air to start the day.

I was up at about 4am, as usual, and looked outside. It was still dark but clear and I could see two planets bright in the sky.

However by the time we were ready to walk to Hynes the clear sky had filled with a thick fog as you can see in the image top left. It was very refreshing to have cool air for a change.

crows in fogAs we walked we could hear some crows squawking about the fog but couldn't see them. I kept looking toward the sound they were making and saw them perched on top of a street light. As we walked they moved from one street light to the next as if they used them as markers to know where they were going.

We found Hynes, right where it usually is, and by the time we had finished our breakfast the fog had completely disappeared.

blue jay stealing raspberriesOnce we returned home Jenny noticed a blue jay in my little raspberry patch. He was stealing my raspberries. She said she was going to have a talk with them and went back outside. The next thing I noticed was Jenny stealing raspberries. She can be so bad.

I had more raspberries this year than any other year so far and I'm hoping for even more next year.

I noticed the blue jay wasn't very big compared to the others we see in our yard so I'm thinking this is a young blue jay. I think the entire family was here early in the week as I got a picture of five blue jays sitting on our Clematis trellis.

    blue jays wrecking havoc again

There were six of them but just as I was ready to take the picture one took off leaving an empty spot on the trellis. That is the most blue jays I have even seen in our yard at one time. Most of the time there is only two and is why I'm thinking they are a family.

Beijing floods unleash online criticism of government (+video)

The heaviest rain in six decades left at least 37 people dead and raised criticism online about Beijing's infrastructure.

    By Christina Larson,?Correspondent / July 23, 2012

A car damaged by floods is seen after heavy rainfalls hit Zhou Kou Dian Village, Fangshan district, near Beijing July 22. The Chinese capital's heaviest rainstorm in six decades killed at least 37 people, flooded streets, and stranded 80,000 people at the main airport, state media, and the government said on Sunday.

    REUTERS

For 16 hours on Saturday, sheets of unrelenting rain pummeled China?s capital, reportedly the heaviest storm in six decades.

By Sunday, Pan Anjun, deputy chief of the Beijing flood control headquarters, had tallied the damage. The Chinese newswire Xinhua reported that at least 37 people had died in storm-related damage or events, including 25 who drowned, 6 who were trapped in collapsing buildings, 5 who were electrocuted by fallen power lines, and 1 who was struck by lightning.

Some 500 flights into or out of Beijing Capital Airport were canceled. Reportedly 736 homes were flooded, and 66,000 residents in the hardest-hit areas had been temporarily located, many from the suburban district of Fangshan. At least 31 roads or bridges had collapsed.

All told, Mr. Pan estimated 2 million people were affected. And many of those have taken to online forums to express anger over what they see as ongoing lack of concern for proper construction amid Beijing's pell-mell growth ? as well as for people's needs amid the storm.

On Weibo, China?s Twitter-like social media site, some residents suggested that China?s Meteorological Bureau should have alerted Beijingers to potential dangers through text messages sent via China?s giant state-run telecoms, China Mobile and China Unicom. Of greater Beijing?s roughly 20 million people, roughly 95 percent have cellphones.

The impact of the unusual storm was exacerbated by problems in the municipal drainage system. Beijing?s total urban area has doubled in a decade, from about 700 square kilometers (270 sq. mi.) in 2000 to almost 1,400 square kilometers (500 sq. mi.) in 2010. Many of the city?s newer drains are built to absorb up to 45 millimeters (1.7 inches) of rain per hour, but at several points the volume of Saturday?s storm was much greater.

?When the city hosts big conferences, there are guards at every bridge. But when the big rain comes, there are none,? wrote Dong Lu, the popular sports anchor and commentator.

?We hosted the Asian Games and Olympic Games,? wrote someone on Weibo going by the name Wen. ?We spent billions of yuan to do monumental things. But now after after the heavy rains, we discover that we don't know how to build sewers.?

And as another concluded: ?The secret of Qingdao, a [coastal] city that not afraid of floods? Its drains were built by Germany.?

Pan, the flood control official, estimated the total cost of damages to be about 10 billion renminbi, or $1.6 billion. More than 13,000 vehicle insurance claims have already poured into the China Insurance Regulatory Commission?s Beijing branch.

Kevin Chou contributed to this report.

For Elderly, Poor Sleep Linked With Placement In Nursing Home

On top of an increased risk of diabetes, weight gain and stroke, researchers have found another thing linked with poor sleep -- being placed in a nursing home.

In a new Journal of the American Geriatrics Society study, elderly women who experienced the most fragmented sleep had a three-fold risk of being placed in a nursing home five years later. Similarly, those who spent the least time actually sleeping after first falling asleep had a three-fold risk of being placed in a nursing home later on, researchers found.

"Despite the growing literature on sleep disturbance and disability, prior to our research very little was known about the association between sleep disturbance in older adults and risk of placement in long-term care facilities," study researcher Dr. Kristine Yaffe, M.D., a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a statement.

The study included 1,664 women with an average age of 83. The researchers gauged their sleep patterns using wrist actigraphy for four nights. They found that, on average, everyone slept an average of 408 minutes (6.8 hours).

Five years later, researchers followed up with the study participants to find that 71 of them (4 percent) were in a nursing home, while 127 (8 percent) were in a personal care home.

Even though researchers found that fragmented sleep and trouble staying asleep were linked with the increased risk of being placed in a nursing home, they did not find any link between the amount of time they stayed asleep and being placed in a nursing home.

Q&A: What is VOIP? How does it work? - Your Telecommunications ...

    How Does VoIP Work?
It is very easy to get into a discussion that is very technical and confusing to most readers. The purpose of this section will be to provide a very high-level overview of Voice over IP (VoIP) aimed at those who do not consider themselves experts in the subject and hopefully with enough clarity that it serves as a good introduction to most readers.

Many people have used a computer and a microphone to record a human voice or other sounds. The process involves sampling the sound that is heard by the computer at a very high rate (at least 8,000 times per second or more) and storing those ?samples? in memory or in a file on the computer. Each sample of sound is just a very tiny bit of the person?s voice or other sound recorded by the computer. The computer has the wherewithal to take all of those samples and play them, so that the listener can hear what was recorded.

VoIP is based on the same idea, but the difference is that the audio samples are not stored locally. Instead, they are sent over the IP network to another computer and played there.

Of course, there is much more required in order to make VoIP work. When recording the sound samples, the computer might compress those sounds so that they require less space and will certainly record only a limited frequency range. There are a number of ways to compress audio, the algorithm for which is referred to as a ?compressor/de-compressor?, or simply CODEC. Many CODECs exist for a variety of applications (e.g., movies and sound recordings) and, for VoIP, the CODECs are optimized for compressing voice, which significantly reduce the bandwidth used compared to an uncompressed audio stream. Speech CODECs are optimized to improve spoken words at the expense of sounds outside the frequency range of human speech. Recorded music and other sounds do not generally sound very good when passed through a speech CODEC, but that is perfectly OK for the task at hand.

Once the sound is recorded by the computer and compressed into very small samples, the samples are collected together into larger chunks and placed into data packets for transmission over the IP network. This process is referred to packetization. Generally, a single IP packet will contain 10 or more milliseconds of audio, with 20 or 30 milliseconds being most common.

Vint Cerf, who is often called the Father of the Internet, once explained packets in a way that is very easy to understand. Paraphrasing his description, he suggested to think of a packet as a postcards sent via postal mail. A postcard contains just a limited amount of information. To deliver a very long message, one must send a lot of postcards. Of course, the post office might lose one or more postcards. One also has to assemble the received postcards in order, so some kind of mechanism must be used to properly order to postcards, such as placing a sequence number on the bottom right corner. One can think of data packets in an IP network as postcards.

Just like postcards sent via the postal system, some IP data packets get lost and the CODECs must compensate for lost packets by ?filling in the gaps? with audio that is acceptable to the human ear. This process is referred to as packet-loss concealment (PLC). In some cases, packets are sent multiple times in order to overcome packet loss. This method is called, appropriately enough, redundancy. Another method to address packet loss, known as forward-error correction (FEC), is to include some information from previously transmitted packets in subsequent packets. By performing mathematical operations in a particular FEC scheme, it is possible to reconstruct a lost packet from information bits in neighboring packets.

Packets are also sometimes delayed, just as with the postcards sent through the post office. This is particularly problematic for VoIP systems, as delays in delivering a voice packet means the information is too old to play. Such old packets are simply discarded, just as if the packet was never received. This is acceptable, as the same PLC algorithms can smooth the audio to provide good audio quality.

Computers generally measure the packet delay and expect the delay to remain relatively constant, though delay can increase and decrease during the course of a conversation. Variation in delay (called jitter) is the most frustrating for IP devices. Delay, itself, just means it takes longer for the recorded voice spoken by the first person to be heard by the user on the far end. In general, good networks have an end-to-end delay of less than 100ms, though delay up to 400ms is considered acceptable (especially when using satellite systems). Jitter can result in choppy voice or temporary glitches, so VoIP devices must implement jitter buffer algorithms to compensate for jitter. Essentially, this means that a certain number of packets are queued before play-out and the queue length may be increased or decreased over time to reduce the number of discarded, late-arriving packets or to reduce ?mouth to ear? delay. Such ?adaptive jitter buffer? schemes are also used by CD recorders and other types of devices that deal with variable delay.

Video works in much the same way as voice. Video information received through a camera is broken into small pieces, compressed with a CODEC, placed into small packets, and transmitted over the IP network. This is one reason why VoIP is promising as a new technology: adding video or other media is relatively simple. Of course, there are certain issues that must be considered that are unique to video (e.g., frame refresh and much higher bandwidth requirements), but the basic principles of VoIP equally apply to video telephony.

Of course there is much more to VoIP than just sending the audio/video packets over the Internet. There must also be an agreed protocol for how computers find each other and how information is exchanged in order to allow packets to ultimately flow between the communicating devices. There must also be an agreed format (called payload format) for the contents of the media packets. We will describe some of the popular VoIP protocols in the next section.

Through this section, we have focused on computers that communicate with each other. However, VoIP is certainly not limited to desktop computers. VoIP is implemented in a variety of hardware devices, including IP phones, analog terminal adapters (ATAs), and gateways. In short, a large number of devices can enable VoIP communication, some of which allow one to use traditional telephone devices to interface with the IP networks: one does not have to throw out existing equipment to migrate to VoIP.

There are a number of protocols that may be employed in order to provide for VoIP communication services. In this section, we will focus on those which are most common to the majority of the devices deployed and being deployed today.

Virtually every device in the world uses a standard called Real-Time Protocol (RTP) for transmitting audio and video packets between communicating computers. RTP is defined by the IETF in RFC 3550. The payload format for a number of CODECs are defined in RFC 3551, though payload format specifications are defined in documents also published by the ITU and in other IETF RFCs. RTP also addresses issues like packet order and provides mechanisms (via the Real-Time Control Protocol, or RTCP, also defined in RFC 3550) to help address delay and jitter.

One of the areas of concern for people communicating over the Internet is the potential a person to eavesdrop on communication. To address these security concerns, RTP was improved upon with the result being called Secure RTP (defined in RFC 3711). Secure RTP provides for encryption, authentication, and integrity of the audio and video packets transmitted between communicating devices.

Before audio or video media can flow between two computers, various protocols must be employed to find the remote device and to negotiate the means by which media will flow between the two devices. The protocols that are central to this process are referred to as call-signaling protocols, the most popular of which are H.323 and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and they both rely on static provisioning, RAS (ITU-T Rec. H.225.0), DNS, TRIP (RFC 3219), ENUM (RFC 3762), and other protocols to find other users.

H.323 and SIP both have their origins in 1995 as researchers looked to solve the problem of how two computers can initiate communication in order to exchange audio and video media streams. H.323 enjoyed the first commercial success, due to the fact that those working on the protocol in the ITU worked quickly to publish the first standard in early 1996. SIP, on the other hand, progressed much more slowly in the IETF, with the first draft published in 1996, but the first recognized ?standard? published later in 1999. SIP was revised over the years and re-published in 2002 as RFC 3261, which is the currently recognized standard for SIP. These delays in the standards process resulted in delays in market adoption of the SIP protocol.

Fundamentally, H.323 and SIP allow users to do the same thing: to establish multimedia communication (audio, video, or other data communication). However, H.323 and SIP differ significantly in design, with H.323 borrowing heavily from legacy communication systems and being a binary protocol, and with SIP not adopting many of the information elements found in legacy systems and being an ASCII-based protocol. Supporters of each protocol have debated at length as to which approach is better and the results are certainly mixed.

Over the years, there have been a lot of papers debating H.323 vs. SIP, but most of the arguments have often been ?religious? in nature (e.g., ?ITU vs. IETF? and ?binary versus ASCII?). Very few of the papers and reports have compared the protocol on the basis of functionality and what really matters: does the protocol do the job? The fact is, both can do the job, though H.323 is superior in a number of ways: better interoperability with the PSTN, better support for video, excellent interoperability with legacy video systems (e.g., H.320), and reliable out-of-band transport of DTMF. SIP, being a ?session initiation protocol?, was not designed to address many of the problems that were raised and solved in legacy communication systems. SIP was also popularized in the market through misstatements that it was ?easy to implement and debug?. The truth is that there is a certain amount of complexity in any communication system and, no matter how one looks at it, it requires about the same amount of work to do the same thing two different ways.

In the simplest deployment, the SIP implementation is certainly easier to develop and troubleshoot. However, there are very few real-world deployments that are ?simple?. As a result, SIP proponents have defined a number of non-standard variations of SIP (e.g., SIP-T and SIP-I), as well as a number of non-standard extensions in order to carry the necessary information or provide the required functionality. Some have said that there are as many variations of SIP as there are SIP deployments.

Today, H.323 still commands the bulk of the VoIP deployments in the service provider market for voice transit, especially for transporting voice calls internationally. H.323 is also widely used in room-based video conferencing systems and is the #1 protocol for IP-based video systems. SIP has, most recently, become more popular for use in instant messaging systems, though there have been no successful commercial deployments of SIP-based instant messaging at the time of this writing.

Both H.323 and SIP can be referred to as ?intelligent endpoint protocols?. What this means is that all of the intelligence required to locate the remote endpoint and to establish media streams between the local and remote device is an integral part of the protocol. There is another class of protocols which is complementary to H.323 and SIP referred to as ?device control protocols?. Those protocols are H.248 and MGCP.

To understand the purpose of H.248 and MGCP, it is important to first understand the function of a gateway. A gateway is a device that offers an IP interface on one side and some sort of legacy telephone interface on the other side. The legacy telephone interface may be complex, such as an interface to a legacy PSTN switch, or may be a simple interface that allows one to connect one or a few traditional telephones. Depending on the size and purpose of the gateway, it may allow IP-originated calls to terminate to the PSTN (and vice-versa) or may simply provide a means for a person to connect a telephone to the Internet.

Originally, gateways were viewed as monolithic devices that had call control (H.323/SIP) and hardware required to control the PSTN interface. In 1998, the idea of splitting the gateway into two logical parts was proposed: one part, which contains the call control logic, is called the media gateway controller (MGC) or call agent (CA), and the other part, which interfaces with the PSTN, is called the media gateway (MG). With this functional split, a new interface existed (going between the MGC and MG), driving the necessity to define MGCP and H.248.

Some service providers provide users with devices that implement H.248 or MGCP (or comparable protocols). In the core of the network, some device serving as the MGC provides the H.323 or SIP logic necessary to properly terminate VoIP calls around the world.

Outside of H.323/SIP and H.248/MGCP, there are also non-standard protocols introduced by various companies that have been very successful in the market. Skype is one such company that has been extremely successful using a proprietary protocol. Which protocol is best for you? It really depends on your requirements, but most people simply want to make a phone call and, as such, it really does not matter.

It is also important to remember that, just as with every other new capability introduced in the world of high-tech, there is always something new and bigger coming down the road. Presently, the ITU is working on a new protocol that will have much more capability than either SIP or H.323. The new protocol is referred to as H.325 and is expected to enable voice, video, and data communications capabilities across a number of separate devices that work together, such as a mobile phone, a PC, and even an HD TV!
Many people have proclaimed that VoIP enables all kinds of new services that were never possible before. This is certainly true, though the hype far exceeds reality and what is practical. Even so, there are a number of new capabilities which are practical and will come forward as we continue to deploy VoIP systems.

Video telephony is probably the first new service that will come forward that helps set VoIP apart from traditional telephone systems. Service providers are already rolling out services offering video terminals to allow people to call friends and family using video-enabled phones.

VoIP also allows one to potentially launch calls from the PC, determine the availability of friends and family members (called ?presence?), control telephone services from the PC, etc. The market acceptance of most of these new kinds of services are questionable at this point, but the potential is there and has certainly garnered a tremendous amount of focus from companies trying to find a niche in this new market.

The one business application that VoIP, video telephony (or, videoconferencing), and instant messaging will enable is application sharing and electronic whiteboarding. The ITU has defined a suite of protocols (called T.120) to address this application and it has been used in tools like Microsoft NetMeeting. While NetMeeting met some success, it failed to gain wider market adoption due to the fact that it was somewhat difficult to set up and use in a corporate environment. By having better integration with the phone and wider deployment of VoIP, businesses will probably find the ability to do application sharing and electronic whiteboarding very appealing in order to improve productivity. These kinds of services that are related to VoIP are most exciting.
VoIP has enjoyed a significant amount of hype in the marketplace. It was initially viewed as a way to get free phone calls over the Internet and has evolved to being viewed as the technology that will replace the legacy PSTN. There have been literally hundreds of companies who have entered the market, the vast majority of which have failed. As with any new technology, there is a certain time required to grow the market and the growth of the VoIP market has been much slower than anticipated.

Even so, VoIP is real, it works, and companies that have been able to ?hang in there? are starting to reap the reward. Literally hundreds of thousands of end users and a very large number of enterprise customers are now using VoIP as their primary phone service. Also, while many people do not know, a very large percentage of international phone calls going over IP VoIP networks today.

The work on VoIP is far from over, though. Many experts in the field are still actively working to make improvements on the technology. Over time, it should prove to be an adequate replace to the current PSTN used around the world today and is already an adequate replacement in limited deployments, such as enterprise environments where network quality-of-service (QoS) is well-managed. It also works extremely well for residential users who are willing to sacrifice a little voice quality for significantly lower telephone costs. Companies like Vonage provide an excellent service to such residential customers.

With that said, there is still a lot of hype. The technology does not always deliver the same QoS as the PSTN, so customers on networks that are not well-managed may hear distorted or poor quality audio. As a practical matter, nobody today can come to a person?s home and help install VoIP service so the customer can use VoIP service on all phones in the house. This may sound like a small matter, but some people simply cannot or will not do the necessary re-wiring in the home. Finally, some service providers offer very different levels of service and have varying degrees of reliability. It?s not uncommon with some service providers to see phone calls to a destination work one day and not the next. This fact is not the fault of VoIP, but due to the fact that some new, smaller VoIP service providers do not have the resources to provide the same level of reliability found in the older, mature, well-funded PSTN.

As service providers mature in their business, the quality on all fronts will improve. Until then, VoIP will remain a viable technology that should be approached with some caution. Users of the technology need to understand the limits and the potential issues before using VoIP as a replacement for current service. Residential customers should keep a mobile phone as a back-up ?just in case? and enterprise customers should take the necessary steps to provide QoS on corporate networks.

Olympic buzz takes off: London welcomes the flame ? Sports ...

LONDON ? With the flame comes the games.

After years of preparation and months of buildup, London?s Olympic moment finally arrived Friday night.

Royal Marine Martyn Williams carried the Olympic torch as he rappelled down from a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter into the Tower of London on the shore of the River Thames. The commando?s grand entrance plunged the symbol of the games into the city?s historic heart, bringing Olympic pageantry to the British capital that last held the event in 1948.

Crowds lined the city?s famed river banks to see the torch arrive, while Yeoman warders ? the ceremonial Tower guards popularly known as Beefeaters ? looked on from inside the landmark?s grounds.

For Londoners, the arrival of the torch ignites a time of excitement ? as well as three weeks of extreme crowds and transport strains.

Organizers have tried to smooth the way. London Underground subway lines are festooned with large magenta and pink signs pointing routes to the Olympic venues. Cartoony ads with wide-eyed horses and beefy musclemen warn commuters to remember that Olympic competitions are taking place and to rethink their daily journeys. Barriers are being erected to mark the special traffic lanes for Olympic vehicles ? disparagingly dubbed ?Zil lanes,? after the limousines granted exclusive use of special lanes on Soviet-era highways.

Londoners who already struggle to get to work on any given weekday aren?t convinced all will be well ? and haven?t been shy about saying so. The atmosphere of gloom has been segmented by the never-ending rain and a constant stream of headlines about the failure of security contractor G4S to provide enough guards.

The mayor has a message for the naysayers: ?Put a sock in it.?

?We?ve got an advanced case of Olympo-funk,? London mayor Boris Johnson wrote in an op-ed piece in The Sun newspaper. ?We agonize about the traffic, when our transport systems are performing well and the world?s athletes are arriving on time. ? We gnaw our fingernails about the blinking weather, when it seems to be brightening up a bit ? and anyway, it?s England in July for goodness sake and a spot of rain never hurt anyone.?

Ready or not, the games are a reality. Olympic banners in hot pink, acid yellow and lime green have painted London in neon. The tubby Cyclops-like mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, are dancing around central London tourist attractions in a desperate bid to be huggable. The city?s famous red double-decker buses are sporting ads flogging the last of the unsold Olympic soccer tickets.

The stadiums themselves are nearly ready. At the athletes village, Cuba and Denmark have been the first to drape flags off their balconies. The Olympic clock ticking down the days in Trafalgar Square has reached single digits.

Olympic historian David Goldblatt, co-author of ?How to Watch the Olympics,? said the flame?s arrival in London marks a key turning point.

?I think it signifies the moment when everyone, whether for, against or indifferent, is thinking ?Oh Lord let?s just get the bloody thing started,? ? he said.

It was only weeks ago that celebrations marking Queen Elizabeth II?s Diamond Jubilee sent Britons into a spasm of patriotic flag waving and ?God save the Queen? singing as they watched a flotilla of 1,000 boats on the River Thames. Will the flame?s arrival inspire the famously inhibited British to do it all again ? to cheer and wave and weep and be inspired ? as the torch relay winds through the city?s 33 boroughs?

Could be ? if the first 62 days of the torch?s travels are any indication.

The 8,000-mile (12,900 kilometer) torch relay has already been a cultural happening across the length of Britain, drawing crowds out to meet it wherever it goes. Spectators in rain ponchos have flash-mobbed to its side, hoping for that once-in-a-lifetime chance to touch a bit of history. Some have even stood by the side of the road to see the trucks that carry the torch between cities, as it fulfills a promise to travel within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of 95 percent of Britain?s population.

?Both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics are like carnivals or tribal festivals,? Kate Fox, the author of ?Watching the English,? wrote in a British Airways survey on the games. ?We behave in ways we wouldn?t normally behave ? dancing in the streets and waving flags and shouting and cheering and indulging in other wildly disinhibited acts, such as maybe even talking to strangers.?

Britons were even more committed to the flame before the last London Olympics in 1948, when the torch was actually run in a relay from the site of ancient Olympia in Greece. Janie Hampton, author of ?London Olympics: 1908 and 1948,? said runners traveled continuously day and night. Crowds emerged to see the 1948 flame even in the middle of the night.

In Britain it was such a draw that police outriders had to push people back as the flame neared the stadium to light the cauldron, Hampton said.

?There is one event in the Games which has captured the imagination ? the carrying of the lighted torch from distant Olympia to the Stadium at Wembley,? The Times newspaper wrote on July 28, 1948. ?The torch itself, quite apart from its symbolism, is something which, like a lance or a banner, a coat of mail or a jerkin of Lincoln green we can love purely for its own sake. It has a somber glory.?

This time the flame has been to every corner of the United Kingdom ahead of its showcase moment at the Olympics? July 27 opening ceremony. Friday was Day 63 of its 70-day journey, which has included travel on boats, planes, horses and hot air balloons. It?s been carried by Olympians and Paralympians. The queen?s granddaughter, Olympic equestrian competitor Zara Phillips, has shared the honor with 84-year-old Moira Starkey, who walks with two canes and was honored for completing a marathon last year by walking around her town hall 1,876 times to raise money for charity.

If the Beijing relay set up the 2008 Summer Games as China?s coming-out party on an international stage, London?s relay has set up Britain as the community Olympics ? not flashy or dashy, not big or spectacular, but warm and well attended.

Organizers had always assumed the world would be excited about the games but were not sure what people in Britain would think ? particularly given that taxpayers will be paying 9.3 billion pounds ($14.7 billion) to host the event at a time of economic austerity.

There?s also the fact that so much activity is focused on Olympic Park in London. There had to be some sense that other parts of the country were involved ? that the Olympics also belonged to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

But the numbers ? some 9 million people have viewed the torch so far ? speak for themselves. Britain has also poured more money into crowd-control plans for London during the Olympics after acknowledging that it underestimated the crowds that would turn out to see the flame.

Whether they are coming just because it is a local happening, or because people are moved by the fairy dust of the games, it?s hard to say. A torch leg features sponsor buses blaring music, streamers and tambourines, cameras and media, cheerleaders shout ?Go torchbearer!?

It?s not really clear how the capital will respond to the hoopla. This is a place where major events happen with some frequency.

But one thing is for sure. Flame(equals)Olympics.

Underwater Homes: Top 10 States With Most ... - AOL Real Estate

Underwater mortgages have plagued the housing market since the housing bubble burst in 2006. Rapidly declining prices meant that homeowners started to owe more on their mortgages than their homes were worth. This can lead to short sales, foreclosures, and a serious blow to a households' net worth.

CoreLogic released its report on underwater mortgages this month, revealing that the number of mortgages with negative equity nationwide declined from 25.2 percent of all mortgages at the end of 2011 to 23.7 percent at the end of the first quarter of 2012. Though it appears that the overall housing market is slowly improving, various local markets are still deep in the red.

24/7 Wall St. put together the following list of the top 10 states with the highest percentages of underwater mortgages.

Astronomers think they have spotted a planet covered in molten rock

A year on the melting planet takes just 1.4 Earth days

While astronomers continue to rack up a list of exciting new exoplanet discoveries, some are simply more awesome than others. The crown jewel of the search for other planets would be an orb similar to Earth, perhaps even similar enough to support living beings. A newly found world called UFC-1.01 is most definitely one of the more interesting recent finds, but not for its ability to foster life ? in fact it's quite the opposite.

While studying a red dwarf star named GJ 436 using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, astronomers noticed something odd: a slight fluctuation in the amount of infrared light the star was giving off. After further study, the researchers were able to identify the cause ? a small planet, two-thirds the size of Earth is orbiting the star at a remarkably close distance. The scientists believe that UFC-1.01 is so close to its star that it not only would be completely lifeless, but may also be absolutely covered in molten rock.

With a surface temperature of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, UFC-1.01 would be absolutely miserable place to take a vacation. But there's still some good news! Because the planet orbits its star so closely, a year on UFC-1.01 takes less than one and a half Earth days. That means you'd be able to celebrate your birthday every 36 hours or so. Just don't bring an ice cream cake, it probably wouldn't last.
